  1. America Online was unable to initialize your modem.
  2.  
  3. There could be several reasons you received this message.
  4.  
  5. Phone line plugged into wrong jack
  6. Plug the line from the wall jack into the jack on the modem labeled Line, Wall, Jack or Telco (not to the jack labeled Phone).

  8. Modem does not have power
  9. If you have an external modem, make sure the modem‚Äôs power cord is securely plugged in, and the modem is turned on.  The modem‚Äôs lights should be on.

  11. Modem has not reset
  12. Reset your modem by turning it off, then back on (external modems), or rebooting your computer (internal modems).

  14. Fax software interfering
  15. Disable any fax software that may be loading.  See your fax software manual for information on how to do this.

  17. Something wrong in setup
  18. Correct the information in your setup:
  19.  
  20. 1.  Click on Setup on the Sign On screen.
  21. 2.  Determine the correct port by looking at the back of your Mac.  If your modem is plugged into the port with the phone icon, select Modem Port from the Connection Port pop-up menu.  If it is plugged into the port with the printer icon, select Printer Port from the Connection Port pop-up menu.  If you have a Geoport Telecom Adaptor, select Geoport from the Connection Port pop-up menu.  If you have a Duodock, select Internal or External from the Connection Port pop-up menu.
  22. 3.  Select your modem from the Modem Type pop-up menu. If you have a Geoport Telecom Adaptor, select Apple Express. If your modem is not listed, try Hayes Basic, Hayes EC, Hayes Extended or Hayes Auto-Reliable.
  23. 4.  Click on the check box for Hardware Handshaking if you have a hardware handshaking cable.
  24. 5.  Repeat Steps 2 - 4 for the Second Try number.
  25. 6.  Click on Save to return to the Sign On screen.

  27. If you selected the Printer Port in Step 2, or have a Duodock, continue with Step 7.
  28. If you have a Geoport Telecom Adaptor, skip to Step 10.
  29. If you selected the Modem Port in Step 2, skip to Step 16.

  31. 7.  Select Chooser from the Apple menu.
  32. 8.  Click on Inactive to disable AppleTalk.
  33. 9.  Close the Chooser window and skip to Step 15.
  34. 10.  Select Control Panels from the Apple menu.
  35. 11.  Double-click on the Express Modem control panel.
  36. 12.  Click on the button to turn Express Modem On.
  37. 13.  Click on the button to Use Express Modem in the Modem Serial Port Setting section.
  38. 14.  Close the Express Modem control panel.
  39. 15.  Close the Control Panels window.
  40. 16.  Sign on to America Online.

  42. Required Control Panel Missing
  43. Some modems require a control panel in order to function. Check your modem manual to see if your modem requires a control panel.  Some common modems that require control panels are Apple Express Modems, the Apple GeoPort Telecom Adapter (which uses the Express Modem Control Panel) and most modems manufactured by Global Village.  If you are using a Power Mac with a GeoPort Telecom Adapter, you will need to verify that you are using the Apple Express Modem for the Power Mac Control Panel.

  47. 1.  Select Control Panels from the Apple menu.
  48. 2.  Verify that the control panel for your modem is properly installed.  See your modem manual for more information.
